Who do I contact in an emergency?
  • For assistance whilst overseas, students are encouraged to call local law enforcement/ambulance/fire. Students also need to contact their host institution to advice them of the situation.
  • Students, faculty or parents may call the Office of International Programs during office hours or Campus Safety out of hours.
Can I visit my son/daughter while they're abroad?
The Office of International Programs have no issue with parents, friends or family visiting their student whilst they are overseas, however, please try to arrange this once the student has finished their term or have a break in teaching. In general, students are expected to prioritize their academic and career goals while abroad and seek to minimize any personal distractions.

Who can I talk to about logistical preparations, such as passports, visas, accommodations and excursions?
Once a program has been selected, students should begin to apply for their passport and, if necessary, visa documents. Depending on the location and duration of the trip, the necessary documentation will vary. Visit our resource pages: Travel, Health & Safety, housing arrangements and excursions.

When should we purchase a plane ticket?
It is strongly recommended to wait to purchase a plane ticket until after the program application deadline has passed, in order to make sure your student has completed all necessary criteria to attend the program. The application deadlines may be found on the specific program’s page under Search Programs

How will my child get from the airport to their dorm or guest house? Is there arranged ground transportation?
For our partner schools in Germany, each host institution has different arrangements. Your student will receive an information packet with transportation advice prior to departure.

What types of scholarships are offered?
For information on scholarships, please see our Scholarships & Grants page.

Will a study abroad experience add an extra semester of classes / will my child be able to graduate on time?
If your student plans appropriately, there is no need to add an extra semester onto their degree. We recommend that students speak to an academic advisor in their freshmen or sophomore year to check their academic progress and get a basic understanding of the prerequisites and courses offered overseas. This is especially important should your student be attending a non-partner institution.  There are some cases where your student may already have the credits required to graduate, but still wish to study abroad. As long as the student understands the financial responsibility by adding an extra term into their degree program, the Office of International Programs is happy to assist in the planning.
