There are many scholarships available specifically for students planning to study abroad. You can also use most

general scholarships to fund your study abroad experience. The Office of International Programs stresses the importance of reviewing all of your options carefully, plan ahead, check eligibility requirements and application deadlines well in advance.
 
Internal Scholarships:
Oswald International Student Fellows Program
The Oswald International Student Fellows Program provides financial grants for travel and living expenses for Kettering students involved in the international exchange program. Grants are awarded twice each academic year on a competitive basis. In general, consideration is given to the financial needs of students, the student’s plan for the expenditure of the grant and the country to be visited. The selected students may receive travel grants from $200 to $2500, depending on the quality of the application and demonstrated financial need, in addition to the Kettering travel stipend provided for study-abroad students.

To be eligible to become an Oswald International Student Fellow a candidate must be in good standing at Kettering University and have been approved for study abroad by the academic department.

Demonstrate a financial need.

External Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $5,000 awarded to students with high financial need, students in underrepresented majors such as science and engineering, ethnically diverse students, and students with disabilities. The average award for the spring and fall is about $4,000.

Eligibility: Pell Grant recipients only, semester, year and/or summer programs.

Benjamin A. Gilman-McCain Scholarship
Eligibility: 
  • US citizen
  • Undergraduate student in good standing
  • Dependent Child of an active duty military member during the time of application in one of the following branches: Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard
  • Recipient of any type of Title IV Federal Financial Aid (i.e. federal student loans or Pell Grant, etc.) during their study away program or internship
  • In the process of applying to, or accepted to a study abroad program of at least 3 weeks, eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement, and
  • Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the US Department of State’s Travel Advisory System.

Diversity Abroad and Overseas Ambassador Scholarship
Diversity Abroad offers $500 scholarships for the fall and spring semester. Economically disadvantaged students, first-generation, students with disabilities, and ethnic and racially diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply.

FlipKey Study Abroad Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship to be used to cover any of the expenses associated with studying and traveling abroad. 

Fund for Education Abroad
Eligibility: Fund for Education Abroad awards are intended to support students planning to participate in high-quality, rigorous study abroad programs. The financial support for these scholarships is provided by generous donors, who are committed to increasing study away opportunities for dedicated American students. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as undergraduates in US universities/colleges who plan to study away for at least four weeks between this upcoming May and May of next year.

Grants of up to $5,000 for students who plan to study abroad during the fall or spring. Preferences are given to students with demonstrated financial need, and strongly encourages students to apply who represent a group that is traditionally underrepresented in education abroad. These groups include, but are not limited to: First-generation college students and minority students. Awards are prorated by number of weeks, minimum $1,250.

GoOverseas Study and Intern Abroad Scholarship
GoOverseas is an independent company that works with students who want to study or work abroad. They run several contests and grant programs to help students fund their overseas experience.

IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants
Available for U.S. students from a broad range of backgrounds to make it possible for them to participate in academic, internship or service-learning experiences abroad. Consideration is given to the following factors: financial need; status as first-generation college students; status as members of underrepresented racial/ethnic/gender groups; disabilities; and the lack of experience with travel abroad. 100 grants of $2,000 per student.

Room to Travel - Study Abroad Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship to be used for study abroad costs.

Scholar Trips
Scholar Trips awards 6 winners with the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship to put towards a study abroad experience.
